IS-INFRA: MCDA for Infrastructure Planning and Environmental Management
This session explores the use of different MCDA approaches to support practical infrastructure planning and environmental management problems (e.g., in the fields of energy, water, waste, spatial planning). The focus is on applications that address characteristic challenges within the infrastructure and environmental planning context and include complex societal trade-offs. Such challenges include, but are not limited to:
- the reality of dealing with societal decisions that involve multiple stakeholders from the public and private domain (with sometimes unclear responsibilities),
- being confronted with long-lived systems and alternatives in need of a very long-term vision whereas usual planning tools address a much shorter time horizon,
- limited or no consideration of future dynamics and uncertainty, alternatives to the status quo and synergies or antagonisms between sectors in current planning
- working in an often resource-constrained environment, conflicting use and at the same time increasing demands and rehabilitation needs
