IS-SUST: Use of MCDM to support sustainability evaluations: a way forward in multidisciplinary research

Organizers: Marco Cinelli, Stuart R. Coles, Kerry Kirwan

The increasing interest in environmental protection and sustainability studies leads scholars to face challenging decision support problems that span across a variety of disciplines and require the integration of a wide array of information and expertise.
The evaluation of progress towards sustainability is based on the identification of assessment criteria that are domain-specific for each sphere of investigation. Each of these spheres has experts and stakeholders who should be included in the decision-making process.
MCDM provides appropriate sets of tools to face these challenges and offers a path for structured decision-making. This session will focus on studies which adopted MCDM frameworks and methods to tackle problems that deal with sustainability-related issues. We encourage the submission of case studies with real involvement of decision makers and other stakeholders, with the aim of showing the potentials and usefulness of MCDM in the effective advancement of our society towards a more sustainable future. Furthermore, we support studies that show successful integration of MCDM with other assessment tools, including (but not limited to) risk assessment and management, life cycle assessment, environmental impact assessment, ecological footprint, urban planning, policy analysis, energy analysis, exergy analysis, benefits assessment, costs analysis and scenario analysis.
More specifically, the papers presented in this session will encourage the description of:
